A Lesson in Luxurious Living: When to Save and When to Splurge

When in college it is important to save as much money as possible, but a lot is demanded of college students, and one of those demands is furnishing an apartment. It is confusing to decide when to save money and when to spend money. So, here is a list of things that can potentially save a college student money.

A student can save big on bedding. Bedding should be comfortable and cute, but keep in mind that it may only be used for one year. An important tip to consider is that dorm beds are usually twin extra long and most other living arrangements do not have twin beds. Another enormous way to save money is by sewing your own pillowcases, and a step-by-step tutorial can be found here. Or if you cannot sew you can also create a tie pillow case here

A new apartment dweller can splurge on a rug. By investing in a rug you are spending your money wisely. Rugs are expensive and it is hard to come by cheap rugs. An area rug that is under 200 dollars and covers a big space is money well spent and it can be used for years. However, there are cheap rugs out there according to Sarah and Jessica from the Pretty Providence blog.

College students can save money on furniture. If something small like an end table is needed it can be found at the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Furniture is a great example of DIY because you can spray paint it any color or even stencil it and make it your own. Another important tip is that most dorm rooms provide furniture so all you might need is a set of plastic drawers.

A new resident should splurge on paintings and other decorative things that can be put on walls. These items should be able to match any design or at least be cohesive.

Picture frames are also an enormous contribution to any apartment because you will want to display pictures of family and friends. You can decorate your own frames with things like stickers and quotes to save money.

By saving on certain items, it is like you are depositing money in the bank. Generally, spend more money on things that will stay in good shape and that will be used for a longer period of time, and spend less money on things that will need to be replaced frequently. And always remember that if you can do it yourself, why not.
